He championed proactive, technology-driven strategies that made the Palos Verdes Peninsula a model for fire prevention and resilience.Working with Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, Eric helped secure a&nbsp;$1.5 million state investment&nbsp;to launch the Peninsula’s&nbsp;Pano AI wildfire detection camera network&nbsp;— a 360-degree, real-time system that identifies wildfire activity within minutes and alerts fire crews before flames can spread.He also co-led the region’s first&nbsp;multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan, unlocking state and federal funds for resilience and risk reduction. Recognizing that 90% of Rancho Palos Verdes residents live in Cal Fire’s “Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone,” Eric spearheaded a&nbsp;comprehensive residential fire prevention program, distributing home-hardening resources to every household and implementing&nbsp;eco-friendly brush clearance&nbsp;across 300 acres of open space — even using goat grazing to prevent wildfires naturally.Eric’s leadership on fire prevention and emergency planning reflects his belief that preparedness saves lives — and that California’s future depends on communities ready to meet every challenge together.<h4>Strengthening Public Safety Through Collaboration</h4>As Mayor and Councilmember of Rancho Palos Verdes, Eric brought people together to make his city one of the safest in California — ranked the&nbsp;4th safest city in the state, with crime rates far below state and national averages.He led by building partnerships, not politics — coordinating with Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna, the Lomita Sheriff Station, and neighboring cities to implement innovative technology to prevent crime and improve emergency response.To strengthen regional coordination, Eric helped create and chair the&nbsp;Peninsula Public Safety Committee, bringing together all four Peninsula cities for the first time to form a unified safety strategy. Under his leadership, the committee expanded real-time emergency alert systems, coordinated disaster-readiness exercises, and funded new&nbsp;school resource officers&nbsp;to keep students safe across every campus.Eric believes true public safety means more than crime prevention — it’s about ensuring every community has the resources, coordination, and trust needed to respond when it matters most.<h4>Advocating for Our Kids and Keeping Students Safe&nbsp;&nbsp;</h4>As a father of four, Eric knows that every parent wants their kids to feel safe, supported, and ready to thrive. On the Palos Verdes Peninsula School Board, he’s championed school safety, expanded mental health support for students, and helped modernize aging school facilities.In the classroom, Eric serves as an adjunct instructor at USC and previously at El Camino College, where he mentors the next generation of public servants and teaches that leadership means removing obstacles for others. He believes education is where opportunity begins — and as State Senator, he’ll continue fighting to make sure every student, parent, teacher, and school employee has the support they need to succeed.<h4>Keeping Entertainment Industry Jobs in California</h4>Eric knows that a fair economy starts with good jobs close to home. While serving on the California Film Commission, he helped protect thousands of entertainment industry jobs by making film and television production more competitive in California.In the State Senate, Eric will keep fighting to ensure creative industry jobs stay here — so the people who make our stories can keep building their own right here in Los Angeles.<h4>Supporting our Small Businesses and Workers</h4>As a small business owner for more than a decade, Eric understands what it takes to make payroll, create jobs, and keep a business running through tough times. When the pandemic hit, he used that experience to help local businesses in Rancho Palos Verdes access the resources they needed to stay open and protect their employees.He knows that small businesses are the heartbeat of our economy — and as State Senator, he’ll work to make sure they have the tools and workforce support they need to grow.<h4>Listening to and Leading for Westside and South Bay Communities</h4>Eric’s public service began right here on the Westside, working as an intern then aide to L.A. City Councilmember Cindy Miscikowski in her Westchester office. He helped residents solve problems in neighborhoods from Playa del Rey to Mar Vista — learning firsthand that listening is the first step to effective leadership.He later coached football at Santa Monica High School, helping young athletes build confidence and character both on and off the field. Those experiences taught him that when people come together — community leaders, teachers, parents, and neighbors — we can find solutions that reflect the unique character of every community we serve.<h4>Protecting and Empowering Vulnerable Communities</h4>Eric’s commitment to fairness began early. As a teenager, he spent his summers working alongside farmworkers in apple packing warehouses — people who worked tirelessly but faced barriers that had nothing to do with their effort or talent.Those experiences inspired him to lead a nonprofit that helped farmworkers support their families and access educational and economic opportunities. Today, Eric continues that work by serving on nonprofit boards, sponsoring a local food pantry for South Bay families, and creating a scholarship program for students pursuing careers in public service.Eric believes real progress happens when we lift others up — and that everyone deserves the same fair starting line to build their California Dream.

Having navigated the pandemic and managed the response to the Portuguese Bend landslides that destroyed hundreds of homes, Eric understands that emergency preparedness is about removing the obstacles that prevent communities from being prepared for the challenges ahead.The recent and tragic wildfires that devastated the Pacific Palisades and Malibu communities have reminded us that emergency preparedness includes building resilient communities in the face of extreme weather disasters driven by climate change.How Eric will lead on emergency preparedness:<ul><li>Build on the $170 million recently allocated to local communities this year, so we have the funds needed for early action wildfire response and resiliency needed to prevent future fires.</li><li>Support communities in managing water-related emergencies like the Portuguese Bend landslides, which destroyed hundreds of homes and displaced families.</li><li>Invest in smart emergency preparedness approaches and high-tech equipment that can detect wildfires when they break out—building on the AI fire detection systems he implemented.</li><li>Encourage recruitment for our local fire academies so we can get new firefighters, paramedics, and lifeguards in the pipeline to protect our communities.</li><li>Strengthen coordination between emergency response agencies across jurisdictions to ensure rapid response during natural disasters.</li><li>Hold insurance companies accountable to process claims rapidly after disasters, preventing families from facing long-term financial crises.</li><li>Help communities with emergency preparedness planning that recognizes how climate disasters create cascading crises—housing, insurance, and economic emergencies all at once.</li></ul>

Growing up in a middle-class community, Eric saw the security a stable home provides for families. A home is more than just a place to live—it’s where we rest, eat together, and for many, where we now work to build a better life. Everyone deserves that stability.The ChallengeEric understands the frustration so many Californians feel about our state’s housing crisis but one-size-fits-all mandates from Sacramento don’t work for our coastal communities. We need more local control in the process, so communities maintain their voice while we work toward meeting our housing goals.We also need to make real progress in addressing our homelessness crisis. It’s unacceptable that over $500 million in homelessness funding in Los Angeles has gone <a href="https://www.foxla.com/news/los-angeles-homeless-spending">unspent</a> because of poor planning and outdated systems. That’s why Eric will push for greater accountability and stronger coordination between the County and local cities to ensure resources are used effectively.How Eric will lead:Eric will use his experience bringing stakeholders together to solve complex problems to push solutions that address our housing and homelessness crises:<ul><li>Provide more first-time homebuyer grants and help public servants like teachers, police officers, and firefighters afford homes in the communities where they work.</li><li>Preserve the voice of local community leaders in balancing the need for housing construction while still protecting their environment and neighborhood character.</li><li>Fighting against harmful legislative mandates from Sacramento like the builders remedy that threaten local control.</li><li>Bring stakeholders together to identify solutions to the home insurance crisis that is making it harder to afford a home.</li><li>Expand programs like the South Bay Regional Housing Trust that give South Bay communities the right to pool funding and resources to develop more affordable housing.</li><li>Support proven solutions to tackle our homelessness crisis like Redondo Beach care court/transitional housing program that successfully helped people with mental illness get off the streets and into the treatment services they need.</li><li>Demand accountability so that homelessness funding is spent responsibility with a focus on getting people off our streets and into services and stable housing.</li></ul>Rigorously collect and review data, so we can measure the impact of programs we implement and make the appropriate adjustments to help as many people as possible.

As someone who spends his weekends and many evenings walking with his kids along the South Bay shoreline and our region’s trails, preserving our natural spaces is deeply personal to Eric. He wants to ensure that kids growing up along the Los Angeles County coastline can appreciate its natural environment for future generations—and he’s put that commitment into action.As Mayor of Rancho Palos Verdes, Eric didn’t just talk about environmental protection—he delivered results. He brought stakeholders together to preserve an additional 96 acres of land for the Palos Verdes Preserve, expanding critical habitat protection while removing dangerous brush that posed fire hazards to neighborhoods. He also implemented cutting-edge AI camera technology to detect fires early and alert emergency responders before small blazes could become major threats.The Challenge:The escalating climate crisis is increasingly creating more frequent and intense natural disasters—wildfires, landslides, and other ecological disruptions—that threaten both ecosystems and human communities.
